FOR THE CANDIDATE:

  •  Make direct eye contact and smile!
  •  Ask detailed questions about the position such as why the last person who had the job left and specific duties associated with the position.
  •  Don't talk about personal matters.
  •  Be positive! Do not discuss past supervisors/bosses in a negative way.
  •  Do not immediately ask about salary. Concentrate on the job description and responsibilities.
  •  Stick to the subject. Don't "ramble" on and on about insignificant topics that are not related to the job.

FOR THE EMPLOYER:

The following are some helpful questions to guide you during the interview:

  •  Why did you leave your last position?
  •  What was your favorite job?
  •  What was your most significant accomplishment in any of your jobs?
  •  What is your "ideal" or "dream" job?
  •  What is your 1-year goal? 5-year goal?
  •  What are your strengths? Weaknesses?
  •  What kind of working environment do you enjoy?
These are just a few of the questions that help you learn more about the candidate. Most importantly, remember that you are trying to get to know the person, so don't be afraid to ASK.
